Boiler Assessment Leads to Projected $25,000 Savings

“PennTAP field staff were very professional and did a great job with the assessment.” – Castle Co-Packers, LLC

The Need

Castle Co-Packers is a packing facility located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The site operates two natural gas–fired boilers to provide heat to the process.

The PennTAP Connection

A PennTAP technical advisor and a group of Penn State New Kensington students completed a boiler assessment of the facility. The New Kensington students were able to receive hands-on experience with the boiler system and see a bottling process in action

The Project

This project was supported and funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program. PennTAP assessed the boiler’s combustion efficiency, evaluated heat loss from the uninsulated piping throughout the facility, and found opportunities to recover waste heat at the facility.

The Outcome

Based on PennTAP recommendations, Castle Co-Packers would be able to save $25,000 per year on natural gas costs. The payback period for the improvements is less than six months.
