The Need
Selmax Corporation is a full-service manufacturer of thermoplastic and elastomer injection-molded products. The company wants to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of its production operations.
The PennTAP Connection
Two PennTAP technical advisors visited the facility to observe operations and collect data and assess potential energy-saving opportunities.
The Project
PennTAP performed an energy efficiency assessment of Selmax’s lighting system and new molding equipment, as well as a review of the plastic purge system. PennTAP also assisted with a grant application for the Small Business Advantage Grant (SBAG) from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The Outcome
The technical analysis determined that by replacing the current lighting system with newer, more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and by installing occupancy sensors, the electric energy savings is expected to be ~22,000 kWh per year. The total cost benefit is expected to be approximately $2,200 per year, giving a simple payback of 1.2 years. PennTAP also determined that replacing one of the existing injection molding machines with a newer model will reduce energy costs by approximately $2,000, in addition to production increases. In addition to exploring energy conservation opportunities, PennTAP worked with Selmax to evaluate a purged material recycling system intended to reduce both raw material and landfill disposal costs. All purge waste could be made into plastic usable by Selmax or sold to another manufacturer. The total cost benefits is expected to be approximately $9,000.
