Architectural Precast Innovations Gains Energy Savings

The Need

Architectural Precast Innovations, Inc. (API), is an architectural precast concrete manufacturer located in Middleburg, Pennsylvania. API provides architectural precast concrete design and production of traditional, insulated, or thin-brick precast wall panels. These provide a customized look for buildings with a variety of product, texture, and color options. For nearly 50 years, API has built precast concrete and premanufactured concrete components in their 32-acre facility. The company wanted to improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of their operations.

The PennTAP Connection

One PennTAP technical advisor visited the facility to observe operations and collect data to evaluate potential energy savings opportunities.

The Project

PennTAP performed an energy audit of API’s boiler system, exhaust fans, and lighting. PennTAP additionally provided assistance with a grant application for the Small Business Advantage Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The Outcome

API made the decision to replace a failing, outdated, and inefficient 2 million BTU/hr oil-fired boiler with an energy-efficient dual-fuel-fired boiler. The upgrade will result in an estimated annual energy savings of 563 MMBTU, saving API $4,393 annually. The boiler replacement will also allow the company to reduce CO2 air emissions by more than 44 tons. This is the equivalent to having carbon sequestered by more than 1,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. The expected return on investment for API is 8.4 years. With a proactive effort to improve energy efficiency, API is a manufacturing role model working toward more sustainable operations.
