Solar Energy Reduces Costs for Kampel Enterprises, Inc.

The Need

Kampel Enterprises, Inc., (Kampel) is a metal fabrication, sealant manufacturer, and airport in Wellsville, Pennsylvania. Lighting is an important factor in the manufacturing facility and entire area of the airport. The site is currently lit by a combination of metal halides (MH), newer T5 and T8 fluorescent lights, and older T12 fluorescent lights. Kampel requires a higher level of light to assist with metal fabrication, but it also increases productivity, task performance, and motivation of their employees.

The PennTAP Connection

Two PennTAP technical advisors and two Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regional energy managers visited the facility to observe operations and to collect data regarding the facility’s waste sources and energy use.

The Project

This project was supported and funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program. PennTAP reviewed the site’s lighting and compressed air systems for energy-saving opportunities. In addition, PennTAP evaluated the opportunity for solar power at the site and recommended a plan to maximize the impact of solar power at the site.

The Outcome

The technical analysis determined that, by replacing the current lighting system with newer, more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and repairing leaks in the compressed air lines, the electric energy savings is expected to be 127,231 kWh per year. The total cost benefit is expected to be approximately $11,703 per year, giving a simple payback of two years.

Furthermore, PennTAP outlined a strategy for implementing solar panels, while minimizing equipment and installation costs.
