PennTAP Performs Analysis at JLG for Energy Savings

The Need

Oshkosh Corporation is a leading designer, manufacturer, and marketer of a broad range of specialty access equipment for commercial, fire and emergency, and military vehicles. JLG Industries, an Oshkosh Corporation company, is the world’s leading manufacturer of access equipment that lifts people and/or material into hard-to-reach areas. OshKosh joined the Department of Energy’s Better Plants Program, with a pledge to reduce energy use by more than 25 percent within 10 years.

The PennTAP Connection

Two PennTAP senior technical advisors and several Penn State students visited JLG’s Pennsylvania Facility in McConnellsburg and Bedford on multiple occasions to assess potential energy savings opportunities.

The Project

PennTAP developed an inventory of the electricity loads within both facilities as the first step. The purpose of this initial survey was to capture key operational components/functions of the manufacturing process. PennTAP then performed an energy efficiency assessment of the ovens and paint booths at JLG’s Bedford facility and the compressed air system at JLG’s McConnellsburg facility.

The Outcome

PennTAP performed an energy analysis of both facilities and provided JLG with a basis for developing a long-term energy reduction strategy. The potential electric energy savings associated with the use of compressed air at the facility were estimated at 441,000 kWh per year. The total cost benefit would be approximately $26,000 per year giving a simple payback of 0.34 years. The technical analysis of the ovens and paint booths determined potential savings of 5,647 MMBTU per year after installing seals on the ovens and minimizing the flow through the paint booths when no painting has occurred. The total cost benefit would be approximately $39,500 per year, giving a simple payback of 0.6 years.
